We all know not to leave our pets in the car when it's warm outside, but I thought I'd add some other pet safety tips for the summertime.

Visit MyDogIsCool.com for great tips on how to travel with your pet, info on how hot cars get and how fast and what to do if you find a dog locked in a hot car.  If you find a dog locked in a car and can't locate the owners, you can call your local Animal Control Officer for more guidance.  Hamden's Animal Control phone number is (203) 230-4080.

When traveling with your pet, remember it is best to keep them secured in a crate.  In the event of an accident, it will minimize their risk of injury.  Be aware that if you are injured or unconscious and your dog is loose in the car the paramedics have to get to you and will either let your dog loose or may have to subdue it in severe circumstances.  Prevention is worth a pound of cure in this instance.  I would much rather my dog be crated for our drives than the chance of them being harmed in order for me to be rescued.  Seatbelts are another option if your pet seems to not like the idea of a crate.  Ruffrider.com is a great website with lots of information and products available to pet owners.  If your pet likes to enjoy the rushing wind as you drive, consider fitting them with a pair of sunglasses or goggles as rocks, bugs, and other debris can cause serious damage to the face and eyes.  Check out Doggles.com for some trendy styles that will fit your pet's wardrobe perfectly.

If you're not going to be taking your pet along for the ride, finding the perfect fit in a boarding kennel is key.  We have heard rave reviews about the following kennels: Tamarack Boarding Kennels in Clinton, CT (860) 669-2593‎, and Candlewick Kennels in Glastonbury.  Please feel free to email us with your suggestions as we are always looking to add to our kennel, pet sitter, vet, and other pet service professional referrals.
